Magic by Alex: Richmond native and master illusionist Alex Ramon,who honed his magician skills at local libraries and events, is backfrom touring the world as ringmaster of Ringling Brothers Barnum &Bailey Circus and coming back to his roots. Magic fans can see theaward-winning performer up close at a free program from 3:30 to 4:15p.m. on March 22 at the El Sobrante Library, 4191 Appian Way.

Computer literacy: Richmond is launching a new program to help4,000 locals learn how to use the Internet for work, research, andconnecting with family and friends.

The city's Literacy for Every Adult Project is partnering withPortland State University and other national groups to teach localscomputer literacy using an online system called Learner Web. Theonline self-paced lessons, which are in English and Spanish, will besupplemented by in-person tutoring from trained volunteer and staff.

The kickoff celebration is from 1:30 to 3 p.m. March 26 at theRichmond Main Library's Whittlesey Room, 325 Civic Center Plaza.Residents can learn new skills, have free snacks and win raffleprizes.

The project will work with local housing developments andcommunity centers with computers including Monterey Pines, BarrettPlaza, Pullman Pointe Apartments, Richmond Village, HaciendaApartments, the Building Blocks for Kids Initiative in the IronTriangle, West Contra Costa County Adult School and the NevinCommunity Center.

The project is funded by a $400,000 grant from the Department ofCommerce.
