NSW: Row over hazard reduction as bushfire crisis eases

Fire bans which have been in force in New South Wales for more than a week have finallyended this morning.

The Rural Fire Service says no new fires have been reported for more than 24 hoursand major blazes in Sydney's north and northwest are within containment lines.

But crews are still working in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, to contain firesat Medlow Bath and Shipley.

Meanwhile the state government is facing more questions over its hazard reduction policy.

Opposition spokesman BARRY O'FARRELL says only about 165,000 hectares of bushland hasbeen burned off or grazed this year.

He's called on the government to justify its claim that more than 500,000 hectareshad been hazard-reduced.
